Meet the Board
The mission of the Lakeshore Excellence Foundation is to acquire and distribute resources that support various Lakeshore Public School programs and projects aimed at enhancing, enriching, or supplementing learning opportunities for students, staff, and community.
J.C. has been on the LEF Board as Chairman since 2012. With a number of family members being involved in the teaching/education profession, the LEF provides him an opportunity to “give back” to the educational process that has been so intricate to his family structure. In addition, he wanted to help provide the best possible education for his grandsons who are in the Lakeshore school system. J.C. grew up in a small farming community in central Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University and Western Michigan University. J.C. has been involved with Young Life, Well of Grace, Rotary, SCORE Consulting, Advisory Board of First Church of God, Economic Club’s Board of Directors, Executive Committee for 2012/2014 Senior PGA at Harbor Shores, and a Reading Volunteer in Benton Harbor Elementary. In his spare time, J.C. enjoys exercising, playing golf, spending time with family and friends and volunteering.
Vice Chair Projects
Lori is a native of Southwest Michigan and a graduate of Michigan Technological University. After 27 years in the engineering field, she is now the Executive Director of the Curious Kids’ Museum; which Lori is quick to point out, is the perfect “2nd career”! She also serves on the board of the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor Rotary Club. Lori and her husband PJ have 3 children, two Lakeshore graduates and one current LHS student. She is honored to be a part of the LEF board and very happy for the opportunity to give back to such a great school district! In her spare time Lori loves to be active, hang out with her family and watch their youngest daughter perform in the Lakeshore Dance, Choir and Drama productions!
Vice Chair of Grants
Kim has been an LEF trustee since 2010. She feels that a great education is the best gift we can give our children and great schools equals a great community. LEF is aimed at enhancing and enriching education, so it is a great fit. Kim really enjoys being a volunteer and helps out in all the activities her children are involved in, including school, sports, any extracurricular activities, church, etc. Kim graduated from Valhalla High School in El Cajon, CA (a suburb of San Diego) and Westminster College in Salt Lake City, UT. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and has worked in advertising. Whirlpool brought her husband, Dave, and their family here in 1999. They have four children, two graduates of Lakeshore and two currently attending Lakeshore schools. For fun, Kim loves spending time with her family, visiting extended family, playing games, and traveling.
Vice Chair Fund Development
Jim has been an LEF Trustee since September 2012. He wanted to be part of LEF because he wanted to give back to the community and ensure that his kids and the children of his friends and neighbors who go to school in the Lakeshore Public School district have the best available educational opportunities. Jim grew up in Kokomo, IN and graduated from Purdue University and GMI Engineering & Management Institute (now Kettering). In addition to LEF, Jim serves on the Board of Trustees for the Whirlpool Foundation and United Way of SW Michigan. In addition he represents Whirlpool Corporation on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Manufacturers. Jim and his wife, Chantel, have two sons currently attending Lakeshore. In his spare time, Jim enjoys spending time on the water with the family at their lake cottage, and supporting his kids in their sports and activities.
Vice Chair Marketing
Kim grew up in Northeast Indiana and graduated with a MBA and Bachelor degrees from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne. Kim joined Whirlpool Corporation in 2004 in Clyde, Ohio and relocated to St Joseph in 2006. Kim is currently the Senior Director of Strategic Communications for Whirlpool Corporation. Kim joined the board in 2013 as the Vice Chair of the Marketing Committee because she believes that great schools will attract great talent to the area. Kim and her husband, Quentin, have three children in/graduated from Lakeshore.
Sharon Austin is a native Michigander growing up in Farmington Hills.. She graduated with a BA in Psychology, Sociology and Biology with a minor in Music from Bethel College. Before moving to St. Joseph, she worked for the corporate office of Holy Cross Care Services in South Bend opening a Transitional Skilled Care Unit at St. Joseph Regional Hospital. After the unit was up and running, she decided to change careers to be a wife and mother. The Austins relocated to St. Joseph in 2003 to develop Lake Breeze Estates. They have 2 children currently in the Lakeshore school system and one graduated. Tom and Sharon own Austin Tax & Financial, opening this office in 2007. Sharon is responsible for managing the office, client relations, and is a registered tax preparer. Sharon joins the board to serve in the role of Treasurer.
Kate grew up in Berrien Springs and graduated from Andrews Academy. She received Bachelors degrees in Psychology and Nursing, as well as a Masters degree in Epidemiology from Michigan State University. Kate served as the Project Coordinator for a federally funded breast cancer study at MSU for many years, and as Executive Director of an oncology practice. She and her husband, Jason, relocated to Stevensville in 2009 to be closer to Kate’s family. They have been thrilled with Lakeshore Schools and this amazing community! Their two children are currently students at Lakeshore’s Middle School and High School. In her spare time, Kate enjoys being involved in the kids’ many activities and giving back to the community through her involvement with several local organizations.
Randy is Senior Vice President- Investments at Stifel. He was recently awarded the Accredited Asset Management Specialist honor through The College of Financial Planning. Financial Consultants who hold this title are not only qualified to identify opportunities in investments, but are also able to work in areas such as insurance, tax savings, retirement planning and estate planning. Active in the community, Randy is a member of the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor Rotary Club. He is past Chairman of the Lakeland Health Foundation Board of Directors and a trustee on the Lake Michigan College Foundation Board. Randy serves as a member of the Investment Committees on all three of the aforementioned boards. Born and raised in the fruit belt of Southwest Michigan, Randy and his wife Trisha have three sons, Riley, Race and Ross all of whom attend Lakeshore Schools.
Trustee, Fund Development Committee
Tom has been an LEF volunteer since 2011. He wanted to actively support Lakeshore Schools. Tom feels that we are fortunate to live in a wonderful community and that great schools are the foundation of making it even better. Tom graduated from St. Joseph High School, Purdue University, and Indiana University. Tom and his wife, Mary, have three children. Two graduated from Lakeshore and their youngest will graduate in 2016. Tom has worked for Whirlpool his entire career, working in manufacturing and new product development. Tom enjoys all kinds of sports and outdoor activities.
Trustee, Fund Development Committee
Chad has been an LEF trustee since 2008. He is a Lakeshore alumnus and wanted to continue to support Lakeshore in any way possible. After graduating from Lakeshore, Chad attended and graduated from Michigan State University. Chad and his wife, Lori, (also a Lakeshore alumnus) have three children in the Lakeshore School System. Chad is the President of Schultz Roofing Supply in St. Joseph. He likes spending time with his family, coaching, family vacations, hunting, fishing, and golfing. Chad is currently serving as the Lakeshore Alumni Association President.
Trustee, Lakeshore Superintendent
Phil joined LEF when he became Superintendent of Lakeshore Public Schools in November, 2013. He was previously with the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools district. Phil received his BA in Political Science/History from University of Michigan Dearborn, his education degree from Eastern Michigan University, his Masters from Wayne State University and is currently completing work toward his PhD from Oakland University. He considers it an honor to serve in a school district that is unwilling rest on its laurels and appreciates the opportunity to become part of Lakeshore traditions and serve the district and community through working closely with LEF. Phil and his wife, Marie, have 2 children, Nick and Matt.
Trustee, Board of Education Representative
Jeff has been a LEF trustee since June 2013 and is currently serving as the liaison between the Board of Education and LEF. Jeff is excited about being part of the LEF and fully supports the mission of LEF. Jeff moved to the area in 1993 from Connecticut and is a 1986 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He is employed with Kinexus as a Business Development Manager. He is a current member of the Lakeshore Board of Education and held various leadership roles with the Lakeshore Rotary Club, Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Southwest Michigan. Jeff and his wife Julie have two children, one attending Michigan State and one in Lakeshore HS. He enjoys sports, golf, and traveling with his family.
Julia is a graduate of Lakeshore High School with a BA from Western Michigan University. She and her husband, Mike, have 3 children. Two of their children are currently students at Lakeshore, and one is studying at MSU. Julia worked in the IS area at Whirlpool Corporation for many years and returned a few years ago as a contractor within the marketing area. She served on the Hollywood PTO Board as Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator, was the garden coordinator at Hollywood for eight years, and still sometimes helps out with their garden classes. Julia also works part-time as a substitute teacher for Lakeshore Public Schools. In addition to serving on the LEF Projects Committee and heading up the Staff Support Grants, she is currently the Vice-President on the Lakeshore Middle School PTO board and teaches catechism classes at her church. When she is not working or volunteering, Julia enjoys reading books and being involved with her kids’ activities.
After graduating from Michigan State University, Bill Scaletta began a 39-year career in education. During those years, he was a teacher, counselor, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal in Muskegon, Manchester and Marcellus. During that time, he completed his Masters in Education at Western Michigan University. In 1991 Bill became the principal of Lakeshore High School where he stayed until his retirement in 2011. He was President of the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals in 2002-2003 and served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Secondary School Principals from 2008-2012. He was also Board Liaison for the National Association of Student Councils in 2011-2012. Bill is a former treasurer of the Marcellus Community Foundation and currently a member of the Lakeshore Rotary. He and his wife, Linda, have three children (Dana Mikel, Jennifer and Derek) and three grandchildren.
Naomi has been a trustee since 2012. She has always been passionate about improving the education of children through teaching, coaching and volunteering. Naomi grew up in New York and Texas. She attended Rice University for her undergrad and University of Texas and University of Houston for two Masters Degrees. She has owned a small business, taught at the elementary school and college level. Naomi and her husband, Marty, have two teenage sons. One son is currently a student at Lakeshore High School. For fun Naomi likes watching her children play in the band and playing hockey, volunteering, traveling and visiting museums. She feels very blessed to live in such a family friendly and caring community.
Trustee, Nominating Committee Chair
Sandy has been an LEF trustee since 2011. Sandy and her husband, Fred, moved to the area in 1993. They have three grown sons, all Lakeshore grads. While her boys were in high school, she was involved with the Band Parents Organization as President for four years and Treasurer for two. In addition, she chaired Band Festivals, Invitationals, Auctions, and other events. After her sons graduated from high school, Sandy wanted to still be involved in the school community. Becoming an LEF trustee was a good fit for her. Sandy obtained her Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Michigan. She is the Accounting Manager at Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant. In her spare time, Sandy enjoys walking, pickle ball, reading and travel.
Sophie was born and raised in Paris, France and moved to the United States to attend business school at Indiana University. She and her husband, Eric, came to this area in 1994 when he began working at Whirlpool. The Bauchets have two children: Stephanie at Michigan Tech and Maxim at Lakeshore High School. For the last 20 years, Sophie has been an active volunteer in several different areas including Lakeland Hospital, the YMCA, Stewart PTO, Lakeshore Middle School PTO, and the Lakeshore Band, while staying at home with her children. For fun, she loves attending any of her kids’ extra curricular activities, traveling, reading, and being by (or on) the water.
Moving to the area in 2006 meant finding a new school district for the McDowell family. Lakeshore’s math and science prospects and active band program made the choice clear! Lisa has enjoyed serving the district as Band Parent Organization President, Vice President, and Co-Chair of several BPO committees, as well as band camp and trip chaperone. She assisted with costuming for various musical presentations, and co-mentored an Odyssey of the Mind team. A graduate of Indiana University with degrees in dental hygiene and elementary education, her employment experiences include hygienist, educator, published author, private tutor, and even a stint as a Mad Scientist for MS of Northern Indiana. She and her husband John have two children, Dana and Sean, both Lakeshore grads. Lisa’s hobbies include caring for her canine pals, reading, and crafting.
Phil works for Whirlpool as a Product Quality Director. He is an Engineering graduate of the University of Notre Dame and completed his MBA at Ashland University. Phil’s interest in LEF stems from his desire to help the Lakeshore school system and students realize their full potential. He believes LEF is an established and effective organization with a track record of making a difference. Phil’s previous Board experience includes Marion Goodwill Board of Directors and Palace Theater Board of Directors. Youth development experience includes many years of coaching Little League baseball, music instruction, and supporting church youth activities. Phil and his wife, Melissa, have lived in Stevensville since 2007 with their children (Nick, Anna, and Lydia). Phil enjoys spending time with family, exercising, playing drums, attending Lakeshore athletic and music events, watching ND sports, and teaching drums at ISM in Benton Harbor.
Jim is the CEO of Jim Roberts Enterprises LLC, a management consulting company, and Jim Roberts – Centennial Securities Advisory Services LLC, an investment advisory company. He received an Engineering degree from University of Michigan and was honored by Michigan State as a distinguished alumnus in the Executive MBA program. Jim is currently serving on the Board for the Cornerstone Alliance Woman’s Business Center; as an advisor to the Berrien County Pension and Trust Advisory Committee; and on the audit committee for the Child and Family Services of Southwestern Michigan Inc. He served on the Boards for the Michigan Minority Supplier Diversity Council; West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; MSU Weekend MBA Alumni Association; the U of M Engineering Alumni Association; the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph Rotary Club; Michiana Junior Achievement; and the Grand Rapids/Kent County Convention and Visitors Bureau – Multicultural Advisory Council. LEF is pleased to have Jim serving on the Fund Development Committee.
Laurie is an attorney and currently serves as the St. Joseph City Attorney. She obtained a Bachelor degree in business from Western Michigan University and a JD from Indiana University, Bloomington. Laurie is a member of the State Bar Association of Michigan, Berrien County Bar Association, Berrien Community Foundation, Character & Fitness Committee of the Michigan Bar Association, and the Board of World Trade Firmitas. She has served on many law affiliated committees, volunteered with the Cornerstone Alliance Womens’ Business Center, and volunteered at area high schools for Constitutional Law Day programs. Her interest in LEF is due to its commitment to support Lakeshore schools, teachers and students in achieving the best educational opportunities possible.
Laurie grew up in Benton Harbor and returned to this area in 1999. Laurie and her husband, Hans, have two children, Max and Erik, who loved attending Lakeshore Schools from kindergarten through high school graduation. Laurie was active in the PTO, volunteered at Roosevelt Elementary, and was active in many sports related activities that her children were involved in, including soccer, baseball and football. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, running, boating and traveling.
Kameron Morris has been an LEF Trustee since early February 2016. He is a native to southwest Michigan as a graduate of Watervliet High School with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Siena Heights University. Kameron and his wife Kristy welcomed their first child in December of 2015 and are excited to become a part of the Stevensville community. He is thrilled to be a part of the LEF to help ensure the best educational opportunities for tomorrow’s future leaders. Kameron is currently Branch Manager for United Federal Credit Union in Stevensville and has been with the company for over five years. He also serves as on the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Lakeland Health Foundation Advocates Group, and is a member of the Lakeshore Rotary Club. In his spare time, Kameron enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and volunteering in the community.
Raymond works for Hartwell & Wolf – Accounting, Wealth Management, and Insurance as the Director of Operations. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia with a double major in Mathematics and Managerial Economics. He later earned his Accounting degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Financial Manager (CFM), Associate in Insurance Accounting & Finance (AIAF), Health & Life Insurance licensed, and is currently studying to pass his Series 7 and 66 licenses. Raymond and his family relocated to Stevensville, Michigan from the Richmond, Virginia area at the end of 2010. His wife, Cara, is a graduate of the Diagnostic Sonography program at Lake Michigan College and now works for several medical facilities as a Registered Medical Diagnostic Sonographer. Their three children (Will – 17, Brooke – 15, and Hope – 9) are all students in the Lakeshore School System. In his “spare time”, Raymond enjoys watching, playing, and coaching sports. He is a lifelong Notre Dame fan and works all home football games as part of the University’s Game Management program. He also shares a love of the arts. He volunteers at all of his children’s musical performances produced by Children’s Music Workshop and has acted as a Featured Extra on television shows.
Missy has been the Secretarial Assistant for LEF since 2010. She wanted to be part of LEF because of their wonderful outreach in the community and their pursuit of higher education in Lakeshore Public Schools. She attended Buchanan High School and Beloit College. Missy and her husband Jason have lived in Stevensville since 2000 and have had the pleasure of being involved in many community activities. They are the parents to one son, Brock, who graduated from Lakeshore in 2015. When the Emery family is not at a sporting event, you can find them on their ATVs, on the water, sitting around a campfire, snow skiing…. or doing just about anything outdoors. Missy is also the Secretary at Roosevelt Elementary. It is her pleasure to assist Lakeshore families and make sure Roosevelt children are happy, healthy and safe.
Kimberly served as an LEF trustee from 2006 to 2016. She enjoys getting to know the passionate people involved with LEF who help Lakeshore students and staff “Reach Higher” in every way. Kimberly grew up in Fort Wayne, IN and went to Homestead High School. She obtained her degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Purdue University and currently works for Candlewood Suites. Kimberly and her husband, Scott, have two daughters who attended Lakeshore Public Schools from Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade and were involved in the outstanding band program. She likes to spend her spare time traveling to historical places and national parks. The Risks love living in this area with excellent schools and the most supportive community they’ve ever known.
